Step 1
× 2: doubling
Multiplying by 2 means adding the number to itself.
4 × 2 is double 4: 4 + 4 = 8.
Step 2
× 10: tens
Ones become tens: 4 × 10 is 4 tens.
4 × 10: 4 ones become 4 tens, that is 40.
Step 3
× 5: half of × 10
Work out × 10, then halve it. The answers always end in 0 or 5.
4 × 10 = 40, and half of 40 is 20.
